Professional Profile: Independent Speech and Language Therapy

As a dedicated independent speech and language therapist, I specialise in providing comprehensive assessments and ongoing support to children both in their homes and school environments.

My services include:

  • Home and School Assessments: Conducting thorough evaluations of speech and language abilities in familiar and educational settings.

  • Ongoing Advice and Support: Offering tailored guidance and continuous support following assessments to foster sustained progress.

  • Tribunal Services: Representing and advocating for children during tribunal proceedings.

  • Collaborative Support: Working with external support agencies to ensure holistic care and developmental support for the child.

  • Training Services: I offer a range of training programs tailored to meet the specific needs of schools. These sessions are designed to enhance the skills and knowledge of educators and support staff, ensuring they are well-equipped to support students with diverse communication needs.

Professional Experience

I am a highly experienced Speech and Language Therapist with over 35 years of service in both the NHS and educational settings. I am a registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists (RCSLT).

My primary areas of specialisation include working with children and young people with varying degrees of hearing loss and children with Autism. I have notably served as the lead therapist for a London Cochlear Implant Team for a decade.

I also have had extensive experience working in a school with specialist provisions for children facing various communication challenges, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and learning difficulties. Throughout my tenure, I have honed my skills in collaborating closely with teachers and teaching assistants to seamlessly integrate therapeutic aims and interventions into the overall school practice. This collaborative approach ensures that the strategies we develop are embedded in the daily activities of the school, promoting a holistic support system for each child.

"Ruth has worked in our school for many years supporting teachers, families and parents with a large range  of communication, interaction, speech and language strategies. Her expertise has enabled all those who work with her to trust her and benefit from her advice and thinking. She has worked with children with profound, complex and multiple learning difficulties as well as ensuring teachers could develop great strategies for children to succeed in mainstream classes too. Ruth developed new approaches to ensure communication was at the heart of all the learning in our SRP classes. Ruth's contribution to our school has enabled teachers and TAs to become skilled at thinking about 'what next' steps for children with communication and language difficulties."
